Membership class to Join a church

I need someone to explain something to me, Why do u have to go to Membership Classes to join a church? Why cant it be simple like the old days? they took u in the back made sure u was save, or got u saved then got your info, and bam u was a member, all in the same day? Im not saying its a bad thing but i need someone to explain to me why? im open ears.
